This is such an important piece, not only because it raises the issue of oppression olympics but also because it magnifies all that continues to divide. At one point in U.S. history (late 19th/early 20th centuries) - Jews, Irish, and Slavs were considered non-white, namely to keep these groups out of politics and positions of power. However, as the 20th century evolved, policy decisions allowed all of these groups to assimilate into the larger, expanding pool of the white race, sowing further division. Abbott is absolutely correct in her statement that white Jews, Irish, and Romani are white and do not face racism as Blacks. The bigotries directed agains them are not racism. But in so far as the sole reason that Jews are discriminated against is because of their religion or culture - that is a bit too simplified and aside from the point. It's not racism and it's time that white Jews, especially those living in the U.S., acknowledge the privilege that their skin color has provided - it is a shield. As one of those white Jews, I always say that I am not a target so long as they don't realize that I am a Jew. And then? All bets might be off, or not. Thanks for a provocative piece!
